Islam's oldest building

Dome of the Rock (Mosque Qubbah as Sakhrah) / Dome of the Rock, located on the Temple Mount (or Mount Moriah) Jerusalem is one of the oldest Islamic relics. Been built in 688-691 AD by the Umayyad Caliph Abdul Malik bin Marwan, the building is more accurately described as a temple rather than mosques, because its shape is octagonal, and around a rock and cave formations. Because the Octagonal building is not facing Mecca and the mihrab (niche mecca) is directed southeast, near the south entrance.
'Mosque' in addition is one of the oldest Islamic building also includes the most beautiful. This building also keeps the rhythm in mathematical proportion. The entire outer wall 67 feet in length, as well as the diameter of the dome and the height of the cylinder is calculated under both 67 feet.
The dome of this building was once made of tin, and then replaced with aluminum. Aluminum dome is now covered with sheets of gold leaf for the help of King Hussein of Jordan.
Beautiful Persian-style ceramics that cover the outer walls of the restoration in 1545 by Sultan Suleyman al Qanuni of the Ottoman caliphate. Walls covered with white marble beneath.
According to the sacred-destinations rock formations there has always been considered sacred by Jews who believe that Isaac on Mount Moriah was about to be sacrificed by his father, Ibrahim. Also believed that the area lies purest of the holy places of the Temple of Solomon and Herod's Temple.
Believed that this building was his inspiration from the Church of the Holy Sepulchure (Holy Sepulchre) in Jerusalem that was built in 325 AD Islamic building was built to rival the churches with a dome.
In Jewish tradition, this rock formation is the holiest place on earth. Although the exact point is not known for sure, the rabbis and scientists believe the area around this protruding rocks. Because the Muslim authorities forbid Jews to pray here, the area closest to the Jews to pray is walled west of the rest of Herod's temple.
According to tradition (hadith) Sunni Islam, this is the stone of the prophet Muhammad ascended to heaven in the event of Isra 'Ascension, and the building was made to commemorate. But the various inscriptions in this building did not mention about the Ascension at all. For the full inscription, because of my rather lengthy post alone.
Under the rocks are caves Bir el Souls (Well of spirits) in which the spirits of the dead is said to sound could be heard. This cave can be entered via the stairs near the south entrance.
